Biographical / Historical
Gove Saulsbury, physician and statesman, was born in Mispillionneck, Del., on 29 May 1815. He married Rosina Jane Smith in 1848; they had five children. Saulsbury died in Dover, Del., on 31 July 1881. Saulsbury received an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1842 and practiced in Dover. He was a delegate to the National Democratic Convention in 1856, 1876, and 1880. From 1862 to 1865, Saulsbury was a member of the Delaware Senate. He was appointed acting governor in 1865 and served as governor from 1866 to 1871.
