Scope and Contents
This small collection documenting Ludwig Loeb's medical education
in 1890 contains his M.D. diploma from Jefferson Medical College,
a certificate of attendance in an anatomy course at the Philadelphia
School of Anatomy and Surgery, and a certificate of attendance
in a course of practical obstetrics at the Philadelphia Lying
in Charity.

Biographical / Historical
Ludwig Loeb, Philadelphia physician, was born in Ungstein, Germany,
on 8 April 1866. He married Agnes Stern in 1900; they had two
children, David Stern Loeb and Sophie L. Siegel. Loeb died
in Pennsylvania Hospital on 4 May 1957.
Loeb received an M.D. from Jefferson Medical College in 1890. He practiced medicine in Philadelphia. Loeb served as chief obstetrician and medical director of the Jewish Maternity Hospital in Philadelphia and attending physician and medical chief of the Jewish Hospital of Philadelphia and was a co founder of the American Hospital for the Diseases of the Stomach in 1905 and a co founder, in 1914, and medical director of the National Stomach Hospital. Loeb was also an instructor in surgery at the Graduate School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania.
Loeb was a member of the Philadelphia County Medical Society, the Northern Medical Association, and the Gastroenterological Society.

Collections of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia by
Sophie L. Siegel, daughter of Ludwig Loeb, on 28 August 1981.
