Manuscript in an unknown hand with pencilled emendations by J. M. Toner, [ca. 1881], describes William
Kent Gilbert’s background and education, professional career and work at the Philadelphia Alms House
and in private practice, and his collections of early American medical imprints, autographs, portraits, and
engravings.

Biographical / Historical
Joseph Meredith Toner, District of Columbia physician and medical historian, was born in Pittsburgh,
Pa., on 30 Apr. 1825. He studied medicine at the Vermont Medical College, graduated in 1850, and
received his M.D. from Jefferson Medical College in 1853. Toner died at Cresson Springs, Pa., on 30 July
1896. Toner opened his private practice in Washington, D.C., in 1855. Toner was President of the
American Medical Association (1873) and of the American Health Association (1874). He compiled a
necrology of Civil War physicians and a medical register of the United States and was Chairman of the
AMA’s Necrology Committee.
