Biographical / Historical
Samuel Booth Sturgis was born in Lower Merion Township, Pa., on 2 May 1891. He married Margaret
Castex Jones (18861962)
in 1916. In 1964, Sturgis married Katherine R. Boucot. Samuel Booth Sturgis
died at Chestnut Hill Hospital in Philadelphia on 14 Aug. 1983. Sturgis received his M.D. from the
University of Pennsylvania in 1914. After serving an internship, 19141915,
at Easton Hospital, Sturgis
became proprietor and physicianinchief
at the Foot Hills Sanitorium in Lenoir, N.C., and was physician
to the surrounding countryside. In 1917, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and went to France. He became
Commanding Officer of Base Hospital No. 92. In 1919, Sturgis established a medical practice with his
wife in Ardmore, Pa. From 1935 to 1946, he was also a physician at Bryn Mawr Hospital. He was elected
to fellowship in the College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1927.
